Anonymous asked: What's your opinion on Asami? I see a lot of people in the fandom disliking her because she's too good to be true...but I don't think that just because she's rich and pretty means that she automatically has to be evil to make up for it!

I’ve liked Asami from the beginning. I think a lot of people have difficulty with her character because they had preconceptions, and she is probably different from what most people expected. Also, in my opinion, Equalist sympathizer does not equal evil, in the same way that Zuko was not evil in the original series. He just had different allegiances. That’s one thing I’ve found lacking in Korra that was present in A: tLA. In the original series, both sides were shown. The fire nation was exemplified through Zuko and Iroh, more than the Firelord Ozai. Even Azula, who was crazy but strangely compelling and sympathetic. In Korra, the face of the Equalists is this masked, unknown man named Amon. He is, literally and figuratively, faceless. That’s frustrating. So, if Aasami was an Equalist, it’d serve the same role as Zuko did in the original series. She’d be the sympathetic face of “the other side.”

I, personally, kinda see the writing on the wall. At least when it comes to ship. The writers are, to me, clearly hinting at Mako/Korra endgame, and I don’t have a problem with Mako/Asami, so I’m a lot more comfortable with Asami because ship preferences doesn’t play into it. So, there’s that.

I can understand why some people want Asami to be flawed, or something, because she is smart, kick ass, rich, pretty and an honest heart with a tragic history and upstanding morals and daddy-issues to make you sympathize with her - and all of that, can, at first glance can be like, “whoa, you’re perfect.” But the writers are better writers than that. They’re going to explore her character, and much like ALLLLLL other Avatar characters, she’s gonna have flaws and quirks. I look forward to seeing it develop.

And honestly, I don’t know what to think about her being an “Equalist.” Because on one hand, I don’t consider that “evil” even if she was. Zuko wasn’t evil, even when he was hunting Aang down. He was layered, and you saw where he was coming from. I can sympathize with the Equalist’s plight, even if I don’t approve of their methods. It’s like an analogy of White Privilege. And apparently everyone’s parents were murdered by Firebenders (why is it always a fire bender? Is there just one SOB going around going, “YOUR MOTHER IS DEAD. YOUR FATHER IS DEAD. YOUR PARENTS - I SHALL KILL ALLLLL THE PARENTS.”) But, yes, while Amon may be megalomaniacal asshole, a revolution usually begins because there are oppressed people. And this is a revolution rather than what we saw in the 100 year war, which was warfare.

So, on the one hand, I kinda looooove the idea of her being an Equalist spy, because it’ll add a layer to her that is so awesome and kickass. If she were, then today’s performance in this ep would solidify her standing in the inner circle of the Benders. Such close ties to the Avatar, which had previously only been a distant thread that tied her through Mako and pro-bending financing. Now, she can actually become Korra’s friend and confidant, having proven her allegiances, and she can get into the inner circle. So, her “taking down her Dad” could actually be a calculated performance to accomplishing a long term goal. If she were a spy, she’d have to be that gifted an actress. Again, that doesn’t make her “evil.” That makes her layered and awesome and cool, much like Zuko was.

On the other hand, she could be exactly who she claims to be.

My bet at this point? Fifty-fifty. I honestly don’t know how it’s going to play out, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THAT. So, yay writers. Mission accomplished. You have me entertained any way this plays out.

Wow. I have a lot of Asami feels.
